Ashwagandha Root

Latin name: Withania somnifera

Native to: India (significant in Ayurveda, India's ancient system of healing)

Benefits: Ashwagandha has a primary role as an adaptogen, helping the body to rebalance after a period of stress or trauma. It is popular for decreasing and helping with stress and anxiety, calming the nerves. The herb also contains antioxidants that can support the liver, immune system, and more. It is also great for rebalancing certain internal balances in the body that may have been triggered due to prolonged smoking. 

Many people have reported that Ashwagandha supports brainpower and can make one's dreams more vivid or intense. It has not been reported that this herb is connected to promoting nightmares or negatives dreams though. This herb can help in deep restorative sleep, as many who have consumed Ashwagandha state they have more restful sleep, less stress and better dreams. 

Smoking Ashwagandha can give one a calmer moof, feeling of relaxation or desire to sleep. It can ease muscle tension and create one to have softer reactions to events that may normally be stressful.

This herb is safe for most people but has been reported by some, to cause stomach upset and diarrhea. Ashwagandha should be avoided during pregnancy and needs to be consulted about prior to use if one has a history of a thyroid disorder or hormone-sensitive condition (i.e. prostate cancer). This herb can also interfere with certain medications such as benzodiazepines, anticonvulsants, and barbiturates.
