Calea Zachatechichi

Latin name: Calea Zacatechichi (ternifolia) aka the dream herb or bitter grass
Native to: Mexico and Central America
Benefits: In Mexico, the plant has been used as an herbal remedy for dysentery and fever. Calea Z. has been known to produce hallucinogenic effects at times and have an effect one one's sleep patters. It has been been known to induce divinatory or lucid dreams and enhance the connection between the conscious and subconscious brain. Because of this, it has been known as the "dream herb" or "bitter grass" because of its bitter taste.
Calea Zachatechichi has been used for many years as a calming agent, mental enhancement, appetite stimulant, cleansing agent, laxative, treatment of diarrhea, dysentery, fever, skin rashes and inflammation, and headaches. Calea Z. has helped with high blood pressure, asthma symptoms such as coughing and breathing difficulties
Calea Zacatechichi can be unsafe if not used carefully or in large doses. There have been reports of hallucinations, nausea, and vomiting. It is not a controlled substance under the US federal law, but Louisiana State Act 159 specifies that it is illegal to possess if it is intended for human consumption, unless they are intended for ornamental or landscaping use. This plant was banned in Poland in March 2009.
