Skullcap

Latin name: Scutellaria lateriflora

Native to: North America

Benefits: When smoked, Skullcap has been known to provide calming benefits, helping calm the mind and clear inhibitions, similar to marijuana. It helps with relieving anxiety and stress, along with helping to rejuvenate the central nervous system. This makes Skullcap a great alternative smoke, but one can also sip the herb as a tea!

The dried leaves and stems of Skullcap are rich in vitamins and antioxidants, and have been used as a relaxant and sleeping aid, with its anti-anxiety effects and promoting a restful night’s sleep, for many years. Skullcap can help to enhance one's mood and reduce anxiety with its anxiolytic properties (we're gonna talk science a bit).

These anxiolytic properties are due to its active components baicalin and baicalein. These active constituents bind to the benzodiazepine site of the GABAA receptor. GABA is a neurotransmitter that is responsible for motor control, vision, and regulating anxiety. If these neurotransmitter receptors in the brain are inhibited, the active constituents will help to promote a sense of calm.

Skullcap can affect the nervous irritability and muscular incoordination, which overall helps to improve sleep and restore natural sleep patterns. Skullcap also helps to reduce inflammation, relieve muscle tension, menstrual pain, headache, and reduce stress. Skullcap can be used as a possible central nervous system booster and a sedative. It is also found to be possibly effective in managing headaches, convulsions, and restlessness.
